L. M. Montgomery wrote (in the voice of her beloved character, Anne of Green Gables:) “I’m so glad I live in a world where there are Octobers.”
A sign with this quote hangs near my door in the fall.
It reminds me to look and to think about the wonders of each season.
The golden light and the crisper air; the blaze of color as nature holds on to its waning days of leaf and petal, before those go to their rest to wait for new life in the spring.
In every time there is beauty to be found, and that beauty whispers of the love of a divine Creator.
Something in nature (whichever season speaks loudest to you,) creates in us a longing for something we can’t quite name.
As C. S. Lewis put it, “The sweetest thing in all my life has been the longing —…to find the place where all the beauty came from…” (Til We Have Faces.)
The longing isn’t really for a place-a where-it is a longing for a being-a Who.
Because our home is not really here, it is with Him.
And in His creation, we catch glimpses of what we have forgotten and what can yet be.
Life is full of beauty and is a thing worth being glad for.
And the tender yearning to more fully live in that beauty is the pull from our true home.
Until the day we return, there are starry nights and frosty trees, warm ocean breezes and crystal waters to fill us with something of the sense of completeness and eternity that is our future.
With Him who is our home.
